About the book

Written with the poet and journalist Quincy Troupe, Miles Davis's autobiography looks back on a career of some forty years. He covers the cool era and the fusion movement, gives candid opinions of promoters, producers, critics and fellow musicians, and talks about the legends he played with, among them Bird, Dizzy, Monk, Trane and Mingus. He speaks frankly about his drug problem and about beating it, condemns the racism he met both in American society at large and in the music business, and discusses the women in his life. Troupe had interviewed Davis for Spin in 1985 before Simon & Schuster asked him to sign on as co-author.

Andi Dumitrescu, a musician and filmmaker, listed it in an interview among the biographies he was reading at the time.
