About the book

Carl Jung's collection of psychological essays, all but one first given as lectures, moves between dream analysis, psychotherapy and religion. Its first part covers the practical use of dream analysis, the aims and problems of modern psychotherapy, and Jung's theory of psychological types. The middle section takes up the stages of life and archaic man, and sets Jung's ideas against those of Sigmund Freud. Later essays turn to psychology and literature and to the basic postulates of analytical psychology, while the last two treat the spiritual problem of modern man after World War I, comparing it with 2nd-century gnosticism and likening psychotherapists to clergy. Cary F. Baynes cotranslated the 1933 English edition.

Jordan B. Peterson included it on his book list.
