Aaron Thier's novel begins in Key West in 2016, with sea levels rising and coral reefs dying, when two young filmmakers meet an old sailor going by the name Daniel Defoe who says he is 560 years old. The story spans a thousand years. It reaches back to the Viceroyalty of New Granada in the sixteenth century, around 1560, after the Spanish have destroyed the Aztec and Inca civilizations, and forward to the twenty-sixth century, when the cities of the Atlantic coast lie underwater, the union has fallen apart and Dan advises the King of St. Louis in the Democratic Federation of Mississippi States. Comic and genre-bending, the book was a finalist for the Thurber Prize.

Ryan Holiday named it among the best books he read in 2016, saying he loved it and raved about it repeatedly.
