About the book
The Harlem-born son of Jamaican immigrants, Colin Powell tells how he got past a barely average record at school and joined the Army, a career that led him through Vietnam, the Pentagon, Panama and Desert Storm. The autobiography names several of the commanders he served under who mentored and inspired him, and it carries a love of country and family, warm humor and a soldier's directness. It also sets out his views on family, personal responsibility and the opportunities America offers. Powell wrote it with Joseph E. Persico, and it appeared in 1995.
James Mattis included it on the list of favorite books in an appendix to Call Sign Chaos.
