Nansen

Roland Huntford's biography presents Fridtjof Nansen, who lived from 1861 to 1930, as the guiding figure for the leading polar explorers of his era, from Amundsen, Scott and Shackleton in the south to Peary in the north. Huntford casts him as the father of modern polar exploration, a pioneer of oceanography and skiing, and one of the founders of neurology. Nansen also worked as a historian and an artist, and as a diplomat he dealt with Stalin, Lenin and Trotsky and took part in the Versailles Peace Conference. As the League of Nations' High Commissioner for Refugees and for the return of prisoners of war, he became, in Huntford's account, an early model of the media-savvy international civil servant.
