About the book
On the night of August 13, 1967, grizzly bears killed two 19-year-old women, Julie Helgeson and Michele Koons, in separate attacks in Montana's Glacier National Park, and Jack Olsen's book details the events surrounding that night. Helgeson was mauled near the Granite Park Chalet, where bears had grown used to feeding on garbage, and Koons was dragged from her campsite hours later at Trout Lake, where she was camping with four friends. Days before, rangers had reported bears eating trash from the chalet and campers, and earlier that summer residents of nearby Kelly's Camp had seen an emaciated, unusually aggressive grizzly. Olsen described the Trout Lake campground as looking like a battlefield strewn with rations.
Ryan Holiday included it among the very best books he read in 2024 and called it great as well.
