About the book

Seven-time Grammy-winning producer Mark Ronson looks back on his years as a disc jockey in the New York City club scene of the 1990s, before Giuliani, camera phones and bottle service changed the city's nightlife. The memoir follows him as a teenager crate-digging across New York, trailing DJ Stretch Armstrong and borrowing from his mixes, and working gig after gig with nothing more than two Technics and a mixer. The book is organized around the downtown venues that shaped his experience, where fashion people, rising rappers, club kids and office workers shared the dance floor. Published in 2025, it reached number 11 on the New York Times hardcover nonfiction list, and Plan B Entertainment optioned it for a feature film.

Dua Lipa chose it as her Service95 Book Club pick for January, calling herself a night person and saying she could think of no better start to a new year than a book celebrating the joy and energy of the dance floor.

My Monthly Read for January is the brilliant new memoir by DJ, producer and songwriter Mark Ronson – Night People: How To Be A DJ In 90s New York City. As a self-confessed night person, I can’t think of a better way to start the new year than a book that celebrates the energy and joy of the dance floor.
