About the book
Stephanie Powell Watts's debut novel brings JJ Ferguson home to Pinewood, North Carolina, where he means to build his dream house and win back his high school sweetheart, Ava. The town has changed: factories are in decline, the furniture industry has sent its jobs to China, and the shadow of Jim Crow lingers. Ava is now married to Henry, who has grown distant, and she longs for a baby but seems unable to carry one to term. Her mother, Sylvia, meddles in the lives around her to fill the gap left by an absent son, while Sylvia's charming husband, Don, keeps hanging around. Watts has described it as The Great Gatsby moved to rural North Carolina nine decades later.
