About the book
In 1878 the whaleship Esther sets out from New Bedford, its crew confident that the sea is theirs. They mean to cruise the Pacific for whales and then hunt the crowded northern grounds before the ice closes. They sail toward the Chukchi Sea, where Captain Arnold Lovejoy has a pressing directive of his own. Ethan Rutherford's debut novel is set in the waning days of American whaling and works both as a sea-voyage adventure and as an allegory of extraction and environmental exploitation. It was a finalist for the 2025 National Book Award for Fiction.
Barack Obama included it among his favorite books of 2025.
