About the book
Malorie Blackman opens her young adult series in an alternative 21st-century Britain, known as Albion, where dark-skinned Crosses hold power and pale-skinned Noughts live under segregation resembling the Jim Crow laws. Callum McGregor is a Nought. Sephy Hadley is a Cross, the daughter of a wealthy senior politician. Their friendship began in childhood, when Callum's mother worked for Sephy's family as a nanny, and in a world where the two groups are not supposed to mix it grows into love. The chapters alternate between Callum's point of view and Sephy's. The novel is the first of six in the series.
Dua Lipa said that, like many people her age, she was partly raised on Blackman's writing, and named it her absolute favourite of her books.

Like many people my age, I was partly raised by Malorie Blackman. She creates worlds you want to carry with you and each story encourages its young readers to ask the important questions in life. Noughts & Crosses is my absolute favourite of her books.
