In the summer of 2011 Bill McKibben spent three days in a Washington, D.C., jail after leading the largest civil disobedience action in thirty years, a protest against the Keystone XL pipeline. President Obama later put the project on hold, but McKibben saw that small, temporary win as at most a stepping-stone, with the Arctic melting and the Midwest in drought. His account follows two sides of the climate fight that he sees as reinforcing each other: building a social movement against the fossil-fuel industry, and a year spent alongside a Vermont beekeeper tending his hives, part of the growing local food movement.
Former NAACP chairman Julian Bond, who went to jail alongside McKibben at the Keystone XL protest, endorsed it.
