About the book
On his 75th birthday, retired advertising writer John Perry visits his wife's grave and then enlists in the Colonial Defense Forces. In this future, humanity has reached interstellar space, but habitable planets are scarce and alien species fight hard for them. The CDF recruits the elderly for their experience and sends them to the front for two years, with a colony homestead promised to survivors. Recruits can never return to Earth. Told in the first person, the novel was American writer John Scalzi's debut, came out in 2005, was nominated for the Hugo Award and opens the Old Man's War series.
Marc Andreessen suggested it as the place to start with Scalzi, whom he named among the top science fiction novelists of the 2000s so far.

Start with Old Man’s War (don’t worry, they put the old dude in a young body, so you don’t need to find out what it’s like to fight aliens after hip replacement surgery).
