About the book
Yoga teacher Jennifer Pastiloff builds her memoir around the stories she tells at her popular workshops. She lost her father when she was eight, spent years depressed and anxious, and worked as a waitress for thirteen years before an offer to host her own retreats pushed her to quit, despite fearing she lacked the experience. She describes how waitressing taught her to notice unexpected beauty, how being nearly deaf taught her to listen closely, and how vulnerability opened the way to love. She also writes about letting go of shame tied to body mass index and rebuilding a family. Running through it is her view that being truly heard is what many people lack.

On Being Human is beautiful and tender, profound and absorbing. I never wanted to put it down. In writing with such clarity and honesty about her jagged path to becoming, Jennifer Pastiloff has told the story of not only herself, but so many of us. I was consoled by this book and also inspired. On every page I felt the presence and the power of Pastiloff’s brave and gigantic heart. This is a book friends will tell friends they have to read for years to come. It’s an important, enthralling debut.
