As vaccine fears multiply around her, she looks into their meaning for her child, her community, America and the world. Conversations with other mothers open onto readings of Susan Sontag's AIDS and Its Metaphors, Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, Bram Stoker's Dracula and Voltaire's Candide. Graywolf Press published it in 2014, and it was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in criticism.
On his list of books recommended for TED 2015, Bill Gates said Biss applies philosophy, science and literary analysis to the rumors about childhood vaccines, and called it a fine gift for new parents.

The eloquent essayist Eula Biss uses the tools of literary analysis, philosophy, and science to examine the speedy, inaccurate rumors about childhood vaccines that have proliferated among well-meaning American parents. Biss took up this topic not for academic reasons but because of her new role as a mom. This beautifully written book would be a great gift for any new parent.
