About the book
Written by the English naturalist Charles Darwin, the work sets out the theory that populations change over generations through natural selection, and that the variety of life descends from common ancestors in a branching pattern. He drew on evidence gathered during the Beagle voyage of the 1830s, plus later research, experiments and letters, and Darwin still allowed Lamarckian inheritance a minor role. Aimed at general readers, the book set off scientific, religious and philosophical argument. Within twenty years most scientists accepted evolution by common descent, though natural selection became central only with the modern synthesis of the 1930s and 1940s, and it now unifies the life sciences.
In a Reddit AMA, Neil deGrasse Tyson named it among the books every intelligent person should read, as a way to learn how all life on Earth is related.
