In the late 1960s and early 1970s the postcard publisher John Hinde produced pictures of Butlin's holiday camps across the British Isles, each staged with a large cast of real holidaymakers in saturated color. The pictures show ballrooms, boating lakes, chalets, theme bars, monorails, swimming pools and quiet lounges. Martin Parr, a devoted admirer of Hinde, rescued the images from obscurity and introduces the collection. Hinde, a pioneer of color photography in Britain, had tried circus management and a traveling show before returning to photography in 1955 with a new kind of postcard, and he built the world's most successful postcard business, though critics took notice only with a 1993 retrospective at the Irish Museum of Modern Art.
