About the book
Set in the easternmost part of Norway, Per Petterson's novel follows Trond Sander, who at 67 moves into a rustic cabin in 1999 to live out his days quietly. A meeting with his only neighbour, Lars, a man he recognizes from boyhood, pulls him back to the summer of 1948, when he was 15 and his friend Jon would turn up at his door with an adventure in mind. One morning the two boys ride off on a local man's horses. The story also reaches back to the German occupation of Norway. Translated into English by Anne Born, the novel won the 2007 Dublin IMPAC Award.
