Edward Snowden recounts his life in a 2019 autobiography, from a childhood in a patriotic military family in North Carolina and Maryland to his postings with the CIA and NSA. He explains how he helped build a system of mass surveillance and why, in 2013, he leaked classified material that revealed it. His teenage obsession with computers and the internet and his enlistment in the Army after the September 11 attacks are part of the account. Snowden also sets out his views on democracy, privacy and authoritarianism. The United States sued him over the proceeds, citing non-disclosure agreements with the two agencies, and a judge ruled for the government; the book was also censored in China.
The only endorsement comes from the publisher itself: John Sargent, chief executive of Macmillan Publishers USA, whose company published the memoir, said when announcing it that Snowden showed great courage in giving up his future at 29 and called his life an incredible American story.

Edward Snowden decided at the age of 29 to give up his entire future for the good of his country. He displayed enormous courage in doing so, and like him or not, his is an incredible American story.
