About the book

Katharine Graham's autobiography follows her own life alongside her family's long involvement with The Washington Post, which her father bought and restored after leaving private business and government service. She describes a wealthy but emotionally isolated childhood, a difficult relationship with her mother, and her marriage to Phil Graham, who clerked for two Supreme Court justices, was close to John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson, and went through manic depression and suicide. The memoir also covers her change from housewife to head of the newspaper and its company, the legal battle over the Pentagon Papers, and the paper's Watergate coverage. In 1998 it received the Pulitzer Prize in the biography or autobiography category.
