About the book
Paul Midler, a Chinese-speaking Wharton School graduate, recounts his years in southern China helping Western importers locate Chinese suppliers and deal with them. His first-person stories describe quality fade, the secret practice by which manufacturers cut the quality of inputs to widen their profit margins. Midler argues that American importers stand little chance against suppliers willing to risk consumer safety for extra profit, and he frames the account as a critique of moving manufacturing to China. It draws on close to two decades of his work in the country and was named a best book by The Economist and by Inc. magazine. An updated, expanded edition followed, and a Chinese edition was launched in Taipei.
Joseph Liu called it a revealing look at the pressure to make goods at the lowest cost for the most profit, and said it changed his own buying habits so that he now checks where products are made.

Poorly Made in China is a revealing book about the cost of consumer consumption and pressures of producing products at the lowest possible cost to drive the greatest possible profit. Getting a glimpse into the cost of outsourcing radically changed my consumer behavior. I now try my best to more carefully consider my own material consumption, and make a point to consider where products are made before I purchase them.
