Positive Discipline
The Classic Guide to Helping Children Develop Self-Discipline, Responsibility, Cooperation, and Problem-Solving Skills
By Jane Nelsen
About the book
Psychologist and educator Jane Nelsen, a mother of seven, builds her approach to discipline on mutual respect rather than punishment. She coaches parents and teachers to be kind and firm at once, so that children of any age, from toddlers to rebellious teenagers, can learn cooperation and self-discipline without losing their dignity. The guidance covers defusing power struggles, closing communication gaps, the risks of praise, building on strengths, and holding children accountable while leaving their self-respect intact. Nelsen also stresses teaching children how to think rather than what to think, and gives specific attention to teenage misbehavior. Dozens of true stories show it in action, and it covers cooperation at home and school. This is a revised and expanded edition.
Brene Brown recommends the Positive Discipline series to new parents, describing it as empowering for children and parents alike.

For new parents, I love the Positive Discipline series by Jane Nelsen (empowering for kids and parents) and the Touchpoints series by T. Berry Brazelton (you really can’t guide your children if you don’t understand what’s happening developmentally)
