John Brockman's 2019 collection gathers 25 essays on how artificial intelligence may affect the future, each responding to The Human Use of Human Beings, the 1950 book by AI pioneer Norbert Wiener, and its warning about machines that learn and make decisions. Contributors include Alison Gopnik, Daniel Dennett, George Dyson and Jaan Tallinn. Some, such as Stuart Russell and Max Tegmark, are deeply concerned about the threat of AI, while others, including Rodney Brooks and Steven Pinker, take a very different view. Several essayists put artificial general intelligence two to four decades away, and the dangers discussed range from lost jobs and social fragmentation to corporate dominance and existential risk. Brockman places his own introductions and anecdotes between the essays.
