About the book

Jane Austen's novel of manners centers on Elizabeth Bennet, second of the five daughters of Mr Bennet, whose estate, Longbourn, lies in Hertfordshire. Because the estate is entailed to the male line and he has saved little for his daughters, at least one of them must marry well to support the others. Hopes rise when the rich bachelor Mr Bingley rents nearby Netherfield, but his even wealthier friend Mr Darcy proves haughty and aloof and refuses to dance with Elizabeth at a ball. Austen wrote it at 20 or 21; published in 1813, it was the second of her novels to reach print, and it has since sold more than 20 million copies.

Jenna Bush Hager included it on her Read With Jenna book club list for the Today Show.
