About the book
Martin Odersky, the designer of Scala, wrote the tutorial with Lex Spoon and Bill Venners to teach the language step by step. Scala runs on the Java Virtual Machine and is both object-oriented and functional, combining the two approaches while still letting programmers use their existing Java code. The book starts with the fundamental elements of the language, introduces functional programming from a practitioner's point of view and also covers advanced features meant to make developers more productive. Its publisher, Artima, notes that the name means stairway or steps in Italian, and the text is a new edition of an earlier best seller.
