About the book

Across ten chapters, Johan Norberg, a Swedish writer and Cato Institute senior fellow, argues that humanity has reached its highest living standards so far. He covers food and sanitation, poverty and life expectancy, violence, literacy, the environment, freedom, equality and childhood, using data from the World Bank, the World Health Organization and the United Nations. Literacy, by his figures, climbed from roughly 20% of the world's people to roughly 85%, and average life expectancy, 31 years in 1900, reached 71 in the early 21st century. Most people dwell on bad news such as terrorism, he notes, though it is rarer than in the past. The Economist and the Observer named it a Book of the Year.

Steven Pinker included it on a Guardian list of books to make readers optimists.
