About the book
Lamont Hawkins, known as U-God and one of the founding members of the Wu-Tang Clan, tells the story of the group's rise from his side of it. Born in Brownsville, New York, in 1970 and raised by a single mother, he learned early how to survive in the projects of the 1970s and 1980s. Along the way he befriended the men who became the Clan's core: GZA, RZA, Raekwon, Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Inspectah Deck and Masta Killa, who bonded over hip-hop and saw music as their way out. Part social history and part confessional memoir, it was the first account by a founding member. The group has released seven gold and platinum studio albums since 1992.
