About the book

In her early twenties, the unnamed narrator of Daphne du Maurier's 1938 Gothic novel is working in Monte Carlo as companion to a rich American, Mrs. Van Hopper, when she meets Maxim de Winter, a wealthy widower whose first wife died a year earlier. After a brief courtship she marries him and follows him to Manderley, his estate on the Cornish coast. There she meets the housekeeper, Mrs Danvers, once lady's maid to the late wife, and finds the house still ruled by the memory of Rebecca. Never out of print, the novel sold 2.8 million copies by 1965, and Alfred Hitchcock's 1940 film of it won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Emma Watson chose it for Our Shared Shelf, her book club.
