About the book
Civil War general Thomas Jackson, known as Stonewall, is the subject of S.C. Gwynne's 2014 biography, which follows how an obscure officer became one of the most famous men of his day. In April 1862 Jackson was one more Confederate general on what looked like a losing side; by June he had led a major campaign and was among the best-known men in the Western world. Gwynne covers the two years of Jackson's war career, his strategic innovations, his private life, the intense conflicts among historical figures of the war and the death that both North and South mourned. The book reached the final round of the National Book Critics Circle Award.
Ryan Holiday included it in The (Very) Best Books I Read in 2015.
