The peaceful mice of Redwall Abbey, in Mossflower Wood, face invasion when Cluny the Scourge, a one-eyed rat, arrives with his army. Their best hope lies with Matthias, a clumsy young novice who was taken in as an orphan and dreams of adventure, and who becomes convinced that the lost sword of Martin the Warrior, a figure of legend, can save them. As the other animals prepare their defenses, he searches for the sword, said to be hidden somewhere within the abbey. Brian Jacques's 1986 novel opens the Redwall series, which grew to 22 novels, and it was later adapted for an animated television series.
