About the book
Poet DéLana R. A. Dameron's debut novel follows Mika Tabor, the youngest daughter of a Southern Black family, as she comes of age in the 1990s. Mika is often in the care of loved ones, hearing their stories and watching them struggle. She learns from the people who raise her on Redwood Court, the cul-de-sac where her grandparents live in a working-class suburb of Columbia, South Carolina, whose residents are all Black. Her exhausted parents work long hours at several jobs yet still take the children on family vacations, and her retired grandparents, children of Jim Crow, have owned their home on the Court since the 1960s. The New York Times Book Review named it an Editors' Choice.
Reese Witherspoon chose it for Reese's Book Club in February 2024.
