About the book
A century of recordings of Johann Sebastian Bach's music is the lens Paul Elie uses to tell a story of classical music and technology. Bach himself, Elie points out, worked at the technical edge of eighteenth-century Germany, restoring organs, devising instruments and refining the tuning system still used now. Two centuries on, musicians turned new recording methods to his music. Albert Schweitzer played for a mobile recording unit at London's Church of All Hallows, Pablo Casals recorded the cello suites at Abbey Road, and Leopold Stokowski joined Walt Disney on Fantasia. Glenn Gould's Goldberg Variations bracketed the LP era, and Yo-Yo Ma has carried Bach into the age of computers and smartphones. It is Elie's second book.
Artist and author Austin Kleon included it in his 2018 reading year, noting that it looks at Bach through recordings made over the decades and that the sections on Glenn Gould and Pablo Casals were his favourite parts.
