About the book
On the planet Resurgam, archaeologist Dan Sylveste is obsessed with the Amarantin, a race wiped out some 900,000 years earlier just as it neared the discovery of spaceflight. Ilia Volyova and the skeleton crew of the starship Nostalgia for Infinity hunt for Sylveste, hoping he can help their captain, who carries the Melding Plague, a nanotech contagion corrupting both human cells and machine implants. On Yellowstone, former soldier Ana Khouri, now an assassin for hire, is recruited by a mysterious figure called the Mademoiselle to kill him. The three strands are set in different years. It was the 2000 debut of Welsh author Alastair Reynolds, a trained astrophysicist, and was shortlisted for the BSFA and Arthur C. Clarke awards.
Marc Andreessen ranked it, with Redemption Ark and Absolution Gap in Reynolds's flagship trilogy, among the bleakest, most ambitious in scale and most scientifically demanding works of hard science fiction, and recommended them highly.

Marc Andreessen (Co-Founder/Andreessen Horowitz)
Revelation Space, Redemption Ark, and Absolution Gap—together, Reynolds’ flagship trilogy—are three of the darkest, largest-scale, and most scientifically complex hard science fiction novels ever written. Highly recommended to anyone who thinks that sounds like a good idea (I did!).
