Journalist William L. Shirer traces Nazi Germany from Adolf Hitler's birth in 1889 to the end of the Second World War in Europe in 1945. His evidence includes British Foreign Office reports, Nuremberg trial testimony, captured German documents and the diaries of Joseph Goebbels, General Franz Halder and Italian foreign minister Galeazzo Ciano, along with his own six years reporting from Germany for newspapers and CBS Radio. Shirer argues that German history ran in a line from Martin Luther to Hitler, a reading some academic historians consider flawed. It won the National Book Award for nonfiction and sold more than a million hardcover copies in the United States.

A few months back, I read a book called A Higher Call: An Incredible True Story of Combat and Chivalry in the War-Torn Skies of World War II that led me to want to learn more about Nazi Germany and Hitler, so I then picked up The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, which led me to wanting to learn more about Winston Churchill.
