About the book
Cultural critic Wendy Lesser tells the life of Louis Kahn, who was born in Estonia in 1901, came to America in 1906 and grew up poor in Philadelphia. By his mysterious death in 1974 he was ranked among the great architects of his era, though his reputation rested on a few works built in his final fifteen years. Kahn chose public projects over corporate ones: research facilities, government centers, museums and libraries. Lesser portrays a warm man, loved by students, who also hid behind a series of masks. Throughout the biography she includes on-site descriptions of his buildings; his signature works include the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad, the Salk Institute in La Jolla and Bangladesh's National Assembly Building.
Design Observer founder Michael Bierut said it reveals both Kahn and his architecture in a way that sheds light on each, and admired Kahn's spaces as bold, original and comfortable at once.

The longer I look at architecture, the more I appreciate the genius of Louis Kahn, the designer of the Yale Art Gallery in New Haven, the Salk Institute in La Jolla and the Kimball Art Museum in Fort Worth. He was miraculously capable of creating bold, uncompromising spaces that are at once completely original and utterly comfortable. This book exposes the man and his work in a way that illuminates both.
