About the book

The December 1972 abduction of Jean McConville, a widowed mother of ten taken from her Belfast home by masked intruders, anchors Patrick Radden Keefe's history of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Keefe, a New Yorker staff writer, follows Dolours and Marian Price, Gerry Adams, Brendan Hughes and the McConville children, and through them covers the civil rights movement and the late-1960s slide into violence, the 1981 hunger strike, the Provisional IRA's bombing campaign and the peace process. He also examines the Belfast Project at Boston College, which researched the conflict. Keefe started the work after reading Dolours Price's obituary in 2013. Hulu and Disney+ later released a limited series based on it in 2024.

Dua Lipa called it a masterclass in the non-fiction novel, with the characters, intrigue and plot twists of great fiction, except that it is true.

My Monthly Read for June is Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe. Say Nothing is a masterclass in the art of the ‘non-fiction novel’. It has all the elements of great fiction – mesmerising characters, intrigue and plot twists. And it also happens to be true.
