Anthony Kiedis's autobiography, written with the help of Larry Sloman, tells the story of the Red Hot Chili Peppers singer and his band. Starting with his birth in 1962 and running to early 2004, it covers a Midwest childhood, a move to Los Angeles at eleven to live with his father Blackie, a drug dealer who gave him his first drugs, and dropping out of UCLA. Kiedis describes forming the band with three school friends, the overdose death of bandmate Hillel Slovak, and his long struggle with drug addiction, including relapses. The title comes from the band's single Scar Tissue on Californication. It became a number one New York Times best seller.
