Seveneves

In the near future, an unknown agent shatters the Moon, and astronomer Doc Dubois Harris works out that its fragments will start raining down on Earth within two years, leaving the planet uninhabitable for thousands of years. Nations band together to send as many people and resources as they can into orbit, assembling a swarm of small habitats around the International Space Station. Neal Stephenson's science fiction novel follows that race to keep humanity alive in space. Published in 2015, it reached the New York Times best seller list.

Barack Obama put it on his 2016 summer vacation reading list, and Bill Gates said it reminded him of everything he loves about science fiction and made him want to read more of it.
