About the book
Paolo Bacigalupi sets his 2010 young adult novel on a Gulf Coast where melted ice caps have left New Orleans underwater and crews of young workers break up grounded oil tankers for parts. Nailer, a fifteen-year-old on the light crew, scavenges copper wiring to make his quota while living with a father who drinks and uses drugs. After a hurricane he finds a clipper ship beached nearby, with one survivor aboard, the daughter of a wealthy family. He has to decide whether to strip the ship of everything it is worth or save her. The novel opens the Ship Breaker trilogy, continued in The Drowned Cities and Tool of War.
