Rainbow Rowell's novel begins with two best friends from north Omaha, Shiloh and Cary, whom everybody in high school expected to end up together, everybody except the two of them. They spent whole summers on Shiloh's porch steps planning their futures: she was headed for college and an acting career, he for the Navy. Now Shiloh is thirty-three, married and divorced with two kids, and living again in her childhood home. Fourteen years have passed since she last talked to Cary. When she is invited to an old friend's wedding, all she can think about is whether he will be there. The novel reached the New York Times hardcover fiction best-seller list.
