About the book
The ten sketches of Eve Babitz's book portray a vanished Southern California, written with one elusive man in mind yet reaching well past that love-letter premise. Her Los Angeles holds movie stars unsettled by their own success, socialites holed up at the Chateau Marmont on three-day drug binges, soap-opera actors afraid the next script will write them out, and Italian femmes fatales. She also travels outside the city, spending an afternoon with spotless Orange County suburbanites, a day with grape pickers in the Central Valley, and a Palm Springs weekend where romance falls flat and Virginia Woolf is her only comfort. Babitz herself moved through Los Angeles society in the 1960s and 1970s.
Writer and artist Austin Kleon, looking back on his 2017 reading, said he liked it a lot because he loves thinking about Los Angeles and enjoys writing that is smart and trashy.
