About the book
Novelist Evan S. Connell examines the fight at the Little Bighorn on June 25, 1876, with long portraits of the men on both sides, among them George Armstrong Custer, Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Major Marcus Reno and Captain Frederick Benteen. He also places the battle within the Plains Indian Wars. Connell first planned a collection of essays on the American West, then expanded his Custer piece into a full book. He spent four years on research, visited the battlefield four times and drew on soldiers' diaries, earlier books and Indian accounts. In 1985 it took the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for History, and it became a 1991 television miniseries.
Joe Rogan said Steven Rinella pointed him to it, called it intense, and said he could not recommend it enough.
