About the book
Set against the social and political turmoil of 1980s Nigeria, the novel by Ayobami Adebayo centres on Yejide and Akin, who met at a film screening at the University of Ife and were married by 1981. Four years later they still have no children, and pilgrimages, medical visits, prayers and other remedies have all failed. Akin's family is traditional Yoruba, and his mother, Moomi, arranges a second marriage for him, to a young woman named Funmi. Both spouses grew up in polygamous homes and dislike the practice, yet Akin yields to the pressure. Canongate published it in Britain in 2017, and Knopf brought it out in the United States.
Sarah Jessica Parker called it a wise and deeply humane debut that peels back the politics inside a marriage, following Akin, Yejide and both of their families with both ferocity and warmth.

Stay with Me is a wise and deeply humane debut novel that unpeels the layers of politics in a marriage from the inside. Ayobami Adebayo tells the story of Akin, Yejide, and their families – a powerfully affecting tale of love, loyalty, and betrayal – with both savagery and heart.
