About the book

Two young cosmopolitan professionals, Laura and Alina, stand at the center of Mexican author Guadalupe Nettel's novel, first published in Spanish as La hija única. Laura is determined never to have children and has her tubes tied. Alina longs to give birth but has trouble conceiving. The novel follows how each woman comes to terms with her own relationship to motherhood. Nettel drew on watching a friend raise a disabled child who faced discrimination, and wanted to explore motherhood and the social expectation that women have children. Rosalind Harvey's English translation was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize.

Dua Lipa praised how the novel faces hard realities frankly while keeping its focus on the transcendent power of love.

Baby Inés doesn’t die as her parents feared – she is still born, despite her prognosis. However, this story doesn’t shy away from the complex realities of raising a child with profound disabilities – instead, it focuses on the transcendent power of love, as the parents get to know their daughter.
