About the book
The starting point for Dale Carnegie's guide is his own experience: in the preface he says he wrote it because he had been among the unhappiest young men in New York and made himself ill with worry over a life he disliked. The book lays out practical formulas for handling anxiety, with advice on cutting business and money worries, turning criticism to advantage, avoiding fatigue and gaining an extra waking hour each day. Ordinary and well-known people also describe in their own words how they broke the habit of worrying. Its aim is a more enjoyable life and greater awareness of oneself and others, and its title is satirically echoed in that of the film Dr. Strangelove.
Populum co-founder Ola Olusoga named it in an interview about how books guided his path to self-discovery.
