About the book
In St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1949, early in the Cold War, seventeen-year-old Nora feels she has found paradise when she wins the heart of Leonard, the shy and gifted son of transplanted New Yorkers. The city is warm and booming with newcomers chasing sunshine. Leonard's mother welcomes Nora, but his father is suspicious of her motives and of her lower-class family. Laura Moriarty has an older Nora tell the story, looking back on her turbulent past with honesty and compassion. The novel takes up family, female desire, sexism, motherhood and prejudice.
