New York Times journalist Mike Isaac traces Uber from its founding as UberCab by Garrett Camp in 2009 to its initial public offering in 2019. Drawing on his reporting for the paper, hundreds of interviews with current and former employees and unpublished documents, he shows how Travis Kalanick, first brought in as an adviser, came to replace chief executive Ryan Graves and take control. Isaac covers the company's work hard, play hard culture, its fights with taxi unions and drivers, the sexual harassment allegations documented by Susan Fowler and the mishandling of personal information. Kalanick was ousted in a boardroom coup in June 2017, and the book ends with Uber listing below its valuation target.
Journalist John Carreyrou endorsed it, describing Uber's story as a parable about power and how far some founders will go to win and hold it, and saying Isaac's account is full of new revelations.
