The stories are eerie, macabre and sometimes very funny, and they showcase the surprise ending. A man stakes his daughter's hand in marriage on a bet about a bottle of wine, a cruise passenger gets caught up in a bet, a harmless-looking landlady takes in a lodger, and a man named Edward takes on a strange cat. Lamb to the Slaughter and Neck are among the other titles. The collection first appeared in 1979.
