bell hooks, a writer, teacher and insurgent black intellectual, argues for education as the practice of freedom, in which teachers help students cross racial, sexual and class boundaries. For hooks that is the most important goal a teacher has. Writing about teaching in an age of multiculturalism, she takes up teachers unwilling to teach and students unwilling to learn, and how to confront racism and sexism in the classroom. Her approach joins practical knowledge of the classroom with close attention to emotion, raising subjects such as eros and rage, grief and reconciliation. The result is a record of her own effort to make classrooms work.
Brene Brown kept it by her bed through her first year teaching at the University of Houston and said hooks's vision of teaching as freedom shaped her.

Whenever difficult conversations about race, class, or gender begin to surface, I remember what she taught me: If your students are comfortable, you're not doing your job.
