About the book
Nick Naylor, the tobacco lobby's chief spokesman at the Academy of Tobacco Studies, is the hero of Christopher Buckley's satirical novel, first published in 1994 and set in the 1990s. Paid to defend cigarettes on talk and news shows, Naylor relies on high-profile media events and provocative rhetoric against what his clients see as an unfair crusade. He is extremely good at the job and untroubled by its ethics. His companions are Polly Bailey of the liquor business and Bobby Jay Bliss of the firearms lobby; together they form the M.O.D. Squad, short for Merchants of Death. Jason Reitman filmed it with Aaron Eckhart.

While the title is more recognized for the movie, it is the book that provides the greatest perspective and strategic insight. Buckley provides an inimitable window into the development and creation of narratives, and how imperative it is for industries and brands to understand how to shape them.
