About the book
Virgil's Latin epic follows Aeneas, a Trojan who escapes the fall of Troy and sets out to find a new home in Italy, where he is destined to become an ancestor of the Romans. Its twelve books echo both the Odyssey and the Iliad. Aeneas was already a character in the Iliad, and Virgil gathered the scattered tales about him into a founding myth that tied Rome to Troy and celebrated traditional Roman virtues. The poem runs to 9,896 lines of dactylic hexameter.
Mark Zuckerberg named it as a book he enjoyed reading a great deal. Ryan Holiday found it the most quotable and memorable of the classical poets and playwrights he read in 2013, judged it better than the Odyssey and took more notes on it than on anything in a long time.

Oh, it’s not a favorite book or anything like that, I just added it because I liked it. I don’t think there’s any real significance to the fact that it’s listed there and other books aren’t. But there are definitely books—like the Aeneid—that I enjoyed reading a lot more.

I made an effort to read some classical poets and playwrights this year. The Aneiad was far and away the most quotable, readable and memorable of all of them. There’s no other way to put: the story is AMAZING. Better than the Odyssey, better than Juvenal’s Satires. Inspiring, beautiful, exciting, and eminently readable, I loved this. I took more notes on it that I have on anything I’ve read in a long time.
